Project #7: Easy Craft Projects for the Home
Tea Light Flower Centrepiece
Time: One hour plus painting time if needed
Difficulty: Cutting skills needed
Yesterday I painted a sheet of paper with rainbow inspired stripes for something special, one of my easy craft projects for the home. Perhaps you can paint a rainbow too, but you can use any pretty paper you have lying about. (Scrapbook paper thickness at least.) I love a good flower craft and I adore making things with paper so I’m happy this fits my nature-inspired theme. Perfect.
This sweet flower table centrepiece is made up of four layers of ‘flowers’. Each flower is made by taking the template of a love heart and drawing it five times around in a circle fashion like so. It took me a while to get the measurements right, so practice on scrap paper first.
The love heart template shrinks in size for each layer. Again, a little bit of experimentation was needed. If you had a protractor handy, you’d be set! Each angle is 72 degrees. Draw 5 lines radiating from a central point and play with the sizes (lengths) to find your perfect four.
When your templates are ready, trace them onto the back of your painted papers. Then cut the four flowers out neatly. Older children can do this task too. NB: The biggest flower doesn’t need any of the folds below. Keep it flat.
On the smaller three flowers, you need to fold the tip of the heart shapes inwards.
This is what is should look like. Nice and even.
When all four are cut out and folded, you are ready to glue them in place.
A glue stick will do the trick.
When you place each layer, try to position the one you are holding so that the heart petals are on a diagonal to the one before. This seems to ‘fill out’ the flower and give it character.
Add a tealight candle and your delightful new table centrepiece is ready to greet you.
I LOVE this craft so much. It’s one of my favourite things I’ve ever made and the photos don’t do it justice. It is so sweet. Adorable actually. I’m trying hard to keep my coffee table free of the normal junk just so I can gaze upon this burst of colour!
